DAY 1
We head for the channel ferry crossing before travelling to our overnight hotel.
DAY 2
We continue our journey into Germany for our first sight of the mighty Alps, through scenic Bavarian countryside and onto our hotel where we are based for the next 4 nights
DAY 3
Today we visit two of the three fairytale castles built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria: Schloss Linderhof, a beautiful Rococo style castle with magnificent gardens and the smallest of King Ludwig's palaces and the only one which he lived to see completed. We also visit King Ludwig II’s famous Neuschwanstein castle in it's dramtic setting perched high on a hilltop, ensuring breathtaking panoramic views from each side. It was inspiration for Disney's Sleep Beauty Castle familiar as location of filming for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (NB. during the tour you will climb 165 steps and descend 181 steps and so is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues).
DAY 4
A full day at leisure in your resort in it's alpine setting at an altitude of 900 metres surrounded by beautiful mountains and waterfalls. You may wish to take the opportunity to visit Ettal Abbey, a vast Benedictine monastery & Baroque church with frescoed dome, liqueur distillery & bookstore. Situated in the village within walking distance from the hotel it was founded in 1330 by Louis IV and is one of Bavaria’s architectural highlights with its striking and unique monastery grounds. Alternatively hop on board one of the local buses which take you into neighbouring Oberammergau, most famous for its for its once-a-decade performance of the Passion Play which draws visitors from all over the world.
DAY 5
Another full day excursion takes us to Chiemsee, Bavaria’s largest lake known as ‘the Bavarian Sea’. We take a boat to the island of Herreninsel and to Herrenchiemsee, the largest and most expensive castle built by King Ludwig II. The most famous part of a visit to the palace is the 98-metre long 'Hall of Mirrors' and the royal bed chamber in which no one ever slept, due to the fact the King died before construction was completed.
DAY 6
We leave Bavaria today, beginning our homeward journey. We cross back into France for an overnight stay.
DAY 7
We continue our journey via a ferry crossing back to Dover before driving back to the East Midlands.
Located in the German Alps and near the Bavarian village of Ettal, the Alphotel provides comfortable lodging within a traditional cottage-style hotel. Take advantage of the onsite leisure facilities, including a pool, gym and spa, perfect for relaxing after a long day.
